Keyboard Problem

I have a problem with my (german) keyboard settings when I use xfce4.2
on my debian/sarge machine.
The german layout is present, but the "Alt Gr" key is not working, so I
can't use some essential signs (e.g. @). 
XF86Config seems to be well configured. 

when I use a different environment (gnome/kde) I don't have this
problem.

can anybody help?
