Changing background programatically

I'm changing ~/.config/xfce4/mcs_settings/desktop.xml file (replacing
the image name) and then, calling xfdesktop -reload. but the image does
not change.

If I open the desktop configuration panel, it shows the old filename
(and changes back the desktop.xml file).

More ideas?
Thanks.
Alberto
