Seems you run Matlab on a Solaris machine over the network, I wouldn't
call that running Matlab on Linux... 

That, however, could give some hint to tell whether or not it's related
to Xfce. Do you get the same Matlab lockups when running Matlab on
Solaris with its display on a Linux box running Xfce?

If so, the best would to try replacing Xfce tools with its GNOME
counterparts and see when the problem goes away.

E.g.

1) The problem shows in Xfce
2) killall xfwm4 && metacity &
3) Does it still show? If no, then Matlab has a problem with xfwm4,
otherwise, it's something else.
4) unset SESSION_MANAGER; rerun Matlab
5) Does it still show? If no, then Matlab has a problem with xfce4-
session, otherwise, it's something else.
6) If still no go, then I doubt it's not related to Xfce.
