I would like my desktop back?

I have spent about 4 hours now trying to get my desktop back.  I have
been through every return after searching the list archive for
"nautilus" and many other variations.  If you could provide a link to
that part of the list archive or some search terms you think might
work I would appreciate it.  I am about ready to give up and  just
reinstall xfce.  The only thing stopping me from doing this earlier is
I run linux and OSS software is to learn and hate giving up.

To recap where I am at. I invoked "killall nautilus", which caused the
icons to disappear and but not the desktop image.  I then logged out
and in again and am left with a black desktop. Right clicking does not
bring up the expected menu.

Apologies for what is probably obvious and repetitive question for the
list.  I would be happy to  write an addition to the FAQ on the xfce
website relating to this issue if I get it resolved.
