How can I use XFCE to instead GNOME

Someone may come along to correct me for the specifics of VNC, but in
general, if you're logging into GNOME using startx, you can just make
your ~/.xinitrc run 'startxfce4', or you can run startxfce4 from the
command line, or switch sessions from your display manager (e.g. GDM)
if applicable).
