Or, are you using alsa-libs-1.0.9_rc2 w/ a kernel prior to
gentoo-sources-2.6.11-r6?  There is a known alsa kernel version mismatch
causing segfaults in this situation.  If so, either roll back to
alsa-lib-1.0.8 or upgrade your kernel.
