No taskbar, no lil star iconbox

Look at /etc/X11/xfce4/xinitrc line 45 to 53. This will perhaps explain what you 
need to do.
It's not ~/"dot"desktop but ~/Desktop/Autosart/
In your ~/Desktop, create an Autostart dirctory, then put symlink in.
