Hmm, but not being able to start is pretty bad as well. If distros start 
changing these variables automatically, we may see this problem a lot 
more often.

If we put it at the end of the lookup list, it will only be used as 
fallback when no other file is found. That sounds to me like a pretty 
good compromise.
