I checked /etc/X11/gdm/Xsession...
If $HOME/.xsession exists try to remove it (change name / make
non-executable) and restart gdm, then if no session manager specified it
should use /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
You can make $HOME/.xsession a link to /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc too...
