I don't know if it's the safe way, but if you want to prevent conflicting
installations, you should at least delete the libraries, the plugins and 
the .pc files.

 # rm -rf /usr/lib/libxfce* /usr/lib/xfce4/ /usr/include/xfce4/
 # rm /usr/lib/pkgconfig/*xfce*

Additionally you can remove the old binaries from /usr/bin.
