Sami,

  I solved the problem as soon as I stepped back from it a bit and realized
that the screen brightness setting applies to consoles as well as to an X
session. So, I added a test and invocation section to the end of
/etc/rc.d/rc.local and everything works just fine. It was one of those d'oh!
moments.
