2) with 23 signers already you should have enough coders to write a 
patch yourself!

3) the petition idea is wonderful, I should setup a site purely 
dedicated to submitting feature requests this way - the more votes the 
bigger support will be... of course you should be allowed to sign 
*against* it as well
