Can't remove the show desktop item on the panel.

Yes, it was a bug in the released version which is fixed in CVS since
some time. I'll release a new version probably in the last next week.
This will include a new mode to display only 1 togglebutton to hide/unhide
the windows instead of the standard 2 buttons.
