Can't remove the show desktop item on the panel.

Actually I have the same problem, but since it doesnt bothers me.. I
just left it there (is appropriately positioned too)

Maybe try editing the ~/.xfce4/xfce4rc and removing the following?

    <Group>
      <Control id="-1" filename="libshowdesktop.so" ... />
    </Group>
