Desktop switcher only switches to first

Hello, all:

I'm having a funny problem with the desktop switcher, which I have plugged
in to the panel.  It correctly registers which of my 4 desktops I'm on,
but will only move to the first.  Clicking on any button other than the
first doesn't do anything.  Is this a known problem, or is it just me?
Incidentally, the pager, which I keep in the taskbar, works just fine.

(xfce4, latest on debian testing).
