If your laptop uses an synaptics touchpad you might want to take a look
at:

On my laptop (R40, 2.6, Xfree 4.3) the touchpad works with tap to click,
mousewheel like behaviour in the outter right of the pad (and even
horizontal scolling is possible using the bottom of the pad) and multi
finger tapping (Like two fingers are the middle button three are the
right button etc.). I may send you my XF86Config or give you some
additional hints if you can't get it to work .. ;-)
