Ready to upgrade. Now, What?

I am using SuSE 9.0.  This is a question about updating 4.0.2 to 4.0.3.

I downloaded and unpacked xfce-4.0.3-src.tar, which yielded a large
number of *.tar and *.md5 files. I deleted the *.md5 files.  I have two
questions:


1)  Are all the files essential to the upgrade?  If not, which are?

2)  In what order should I unpack these files and install them?
