update attempted, damage results (HELP!)

Under SuSE 9, attempting to update XFCE to 4.0.2, I used the rpms
provided for SuSE 9.0 and installed with YAST2.  All seemed to go ok.  I
then rebooted and saw the SuSE login screen.  As usual, after signing
in, the desktop option showed was XFCE4.  I logged in and got KDE!

Somehow, while updating, I lost the ability to access XFCE4.  How can I
fix that?
