ymessenger on Linux is fairly bad alright. Anyway, my understanding as a
user not a developer or lawyer or dentist is as follows:

the GAIM thing is that GAIM never properly figured out the latest Yahoo
authentication protocol; their stab at it was effective until another
small change was made, then it broke again. Someone else did a complete
reverse-engineering and has a patch, but the GAIM project isn't applying
it because of reverse-engineering/DMCA fears. The patch is linked from
somewhere in the GAIM sourceforge forum that I can't find, but this
nutball built RPMs: http://www.linuxwhore.com/gaim/. The Fedora ones
work on Mandrake.
