xmodmap for extra keys

surely if it works in windowmaker, it should work in xfce - as far as
xmodmap is concerned?

if i output the keymap table with

    $ xmodmap -pk

the settings are displayed correctly, in both wm and xfce. however, xev
only shows the new mappings under wm, NOT under xfce.

i think i may give up and use lineak or hotkeys, but it's annoying cos i
can't see any reason why it doesn't work
