Theme problems

Christopher Meredith's recent question about Nautilus icons made me take pause about some troubles I've been having recently.  Perhaps some of you Gentooers are familiar with the Lila theme; for reference: http://lila-theme.uni.cc/

Anyway, I've had loads of trouble using the icons therein, and I'm wondering now if perhaps it's not just the theme's fault.  The GTK themes don't seem to work (you can check my screenshots on ftp://lila.serveftp.org/upload/ to see what I mean) very well, or fully, and the icon sets are spotty; some of them don't seem to work.

Can anyone clue me in on how to get to the bottom of this?
