xfce theme install

I am having such difficulty installing a couple of themes that i
downloaded. I have searched and tried every advice i have found
(including some from this forum) but it just doesn't work.

Hre is my situation: I stalled slack 9.1, the upgraded xfree86 and xfce
to current. I downloded the themes and tar them to /usr/share/themes -
because that is where i found all the others.The themes are (glass and
aero). 

I them tried settings->user interface, but they are not there. Okay
someone mentioned gtk-xfce-engine. I found that under
/usr/share/themes. I did a ./configure --prefix=/usr then make then
make install. After which i went back to settings->user interface and
still the 2 themes are not there.

Can one please show me how to get themes working in xfce. It supprises
me that a task like this which most people will be performing quite
frequently, appears not so staright forward and the worst bit is there
is hardly a clear tutorial out there.
