system load monitor wrong

i use xfce4 with the latest gentoo builds (mostly 4.0.4, 
systemload-0.3.4), 2.6.5-mm kernel, APM

the memory usage monitor for xfce4 shows a different result to both top 
and /proc/meminfo:

top:
Mem:    515796k total,   503968k used,    11828k free,    86748k buffers

meminfo:
MemTotal:       515796 kB
MemFree:         11892 kB
Buffers:         86748 kB
Cached:         307560 kB
SwapCached:          8 kB
Active:         266292 kB
Inactive:       153628 kB

xfce4 monitor:
Memory: 191MB of 503MB used


is this a bug, or is there something else involved?
