are you running xfce4-session? you need to be running session management for this to help out. I fyou are building from gentoo ebuilds, this is still disabled from RC3. you will need to edit your xfce4-session ebuild file and remove the -* from ARCH_KEYWORDS="-*" and re-emerge it.
also make sure you're xinitrc is launching Xfce4 from xfce4-session.
