I just added the following lines to my sources.list and used aptitude to select them:

deb http://people.debian.org/~madkiss/xfce4/4.0.0 ./
deb-src http://people.debian.org/~madkiss/xfce4/4.0.0 ./

Is there a particular order that these need to be installed in that dpkg wouldn't have gotten correct?
