xfce4-session question

I have install session manager, but xterms which I had open when I exit are
not there when I log back in. I have got the automatically save session on
logout button clicked in the settings.

Just tried out the xfce4 session manager, it's great not having to start up
the same applications all the time. However I'm wondering how apps are shut
down when you quit X with them still running. Is it the equivalent of
letting them crash? Or do they close gracefully somehow? Thanks,
