Observed this thx. But as I wrote my screen is small (and I prefer to have the bar non-hiding.) 
Actually I'd like to know whether it's a (synergetic ;) interplay between different widget & button properties (eg border sizes etc) or whether there's a more direct manipulation possible.

But I agree: If it's the first one probably better should take it as it comes :-) or some gtk experience is  necessary (in the sense of phenomenology ;)
