Not quite, Olivier.
The problem showed up only after I modified .xinitrc and XF86Config-4 to
reflect a color depth (rather than bpp) of 24 rather than 32 bits. It may
well be coincidental, but I'm suspicious. It was only after making these
syntax changes that the problem appeared.
I'm well aware that there is no 32 bpp, that 24 bpp is aligned on 32 bit
boundaries and actually provides the 16x10^6 colors we call True Color. I
think that the terminology is a syntactical change from XFree86-3.x to
XFree86-4.x.
When I have time this week (ha!) I'll go buy a new video card and see if
that makes a difference. I'll report back with the results.
