black screen

add 

# Launch xscreensaver (if available)
xscreensaver -no-splash &

to your system xinitrc file. Mine is  /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions/Xfce
Could also be in /usr/local/etc/X11/

If you open xscreensaver there is a check box under advanced to enable
Power Management. Uncheck it
