Where's my clipboard?

I'm having problems getting text highlighted within a terminal window to 
appear in the clipboard. I want to copy text from a terminal window and paste 
into another application. 

Using both xfterm, multi-gnome-terminal, I can copy and paste within the 
terminal window itself, but not paste into some other app. Copying from some 
other app into the terminal window is fine.

Is there a setting somewhere that I need to change?
