As Olivier suggested, I posted to the Xpert mailing list on XFree.org.  I received a reply containing a tid-bit of information: DRI is implemented for 16-bit, but not for 24-bit.

I have had one screen freeze in 24-bit mode exactly as described above for 16-bit, so the problem still exists, just less frequent.  Version 4.1 was rock solid.  I don't want to go back to it without exploring what is happening with 4.2.  I'll post what I find out.
