Yes, definitely, the Xpm package that ships with Mandrake (7.2, 8.0, 8.1
at least) are incomplete.

Add the following links :

cd /usr/X11R6/lib
ln -s /usr/X11R6/lib/libXpm.so.4.11 /usr/X11R6/lib/libXpm.so.4
ln -s /usr/X11R6/lib/libXpm.so.4.11 /usr/X11R6/lib/libXpm.so
ldconfig -v

After that, the build should be okay.
