xfce + text display problems

I am running 3.0 on a toshiba satellite 110CS and just last night installed
xfce from the packages and pkg_add cliamed that all installed well.  I then
continued to execute xfce_setup and make sure all in the .xinitrc file was
too my liking.  When I started up X all the text displayed as blocks
[][][][][], but any apps started from an xconsole would display fine.  I am
not really familiar with XF86 so I dont really know where to go from here,
any recomendations?
