OK, another thought.  My supposed bleeding edge system has
gtk+-2.0.5-r2 and glib-2.0.4-r1 and pkg-config-0.12.0.  Maybe
glib2-2.0.6.0.200207270434-0 is a little too far ahead of the curve?
