problem with gmc and other gnome apps

Hi, I'm running slackware 8.1 and using xfce 3.8.16 and anytime I try to
run gmc or the gnome panel as a use I
get the following error in my xterm:

**Warning** Could not get name service!
** Error **: file goad.c line 1239 (goad_server_register) : assertion failed
(name server != CORBA_OBJECT_NIL)
aborting....
Aborted.

But I can su to root and run these programs as root no problem in the
same session.
I'm not sure what the problem is because I had the thing happen when I
was using mandrake 8.2
