Backgrounds etc in xfce

How can I enable xfce to use the .jpg files and the non-extension files
in /usr/share/xfce/ pallette|textures|backgrounds .

Selecting anything without a .xpm extension via the
'settings-backgrounds-browse' route gives a 'invalid file format' error

Using xfce-3.8.16-3 on debian unstable. Have the same prob. on the tarball
for 3.8.18 from the homepage.

I tried converting a .jpg to .xpm, messy and not really a good way to go.

Should this happen?
