Ok group, my apologies for the batch of stray mail.
And especially Chris whom I've twice nailed now.

I found the cause and fixed it finally.  I had set a to-address in 
my inbox that was being inserted into anything I mailed.  But the
insertion wasn't visible until the mail was sent.

Yuck,  a nasty little glitch in my cvs gnus mail/news reader. 
A globally assigned  to-address should be overridden when replying 
to mail that has a From address in it.

Hopefully now corrected.
