Joe,

  I don't know how to restart xfce without killing the X server and
restarting it. If there is another way, I'd sure like to learn it.

  No apologies are necessary! I still cannot get that 3D view back, and I
had no luck (so far) in the mail list archives about the different colored
v.d. buttons on the panel, but I'll get there eventually.
