Thanks.  Reinstalling the xfce lock as suggested and the screen xfce  saver, if
I recall the screensaver was missing,  then rebooting fixed the problem.  I do
get a black screen now with ctl-alt-l mapped to xflock4, but esc brings up the
unlock screen.

The bug per se was that the Manjaro installer did not include all the xfce
components; a bit of an issue for new users.  The black screen would put people
off too.
