According to:
$ xfconf-query --monitor -c xfwm4

it shows that no 'set' is happening when:
$ xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/use_compositing; xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p
/general/use_compositing -T; xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/use_compositing

shows:
true
true

or:
false
false
