You use Debian/Ubuntu, right? It uses a different configuration that loads
plugins from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/xfce4/panel/plugins instead of
/usr/lib/xfce4/panel/plugins, you would need to also pass
--libdir=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu to ./autogen.sh.

Sorry, I should have told you to backup you panel configuration first (with
xfce4-panel-profiles), but I completely forgot that it could erase all plugin
configurations even when running from the source (I think there's a bug for
this already).
