I guess you at least need to have a floppy disk connected and functional.  I
dont have a floppy disk any more on my system, and I cannot make
thunar/xfdesktop showing a floppy drive.
I guess in the desktop settings in the tab "symbols" you have to tic "removable
media" and "harddiscs and drives" to see it.
