This happened in v1.8.3

I click on an item and the tree view scrolls so the item is out of the
viewport.

What seems to happen is: if I have a directory structure like

/a
  /b
    /c
      /d
        /e

the tree view seems to be trying to keep /a in the view, even tho I click on
"e".  For this to happen, there needs to be enough "distance" between a and e
that they don't both fit on the visible area.
