Okay, university finally loosened its grip.

I found this bugreport in the debian bugtracker:

and after putting
dbus-update-activation-environment --systemd --all
into my .xinitrc, everything works just fine. Now I still don't know the
underlying issue but it may only be some configuration problem within arch
linux?
