Ok, so it pretty much looks like this is a theming bug which hopefully will
vanish, with the transition to gtk3.

I dont have any complete list, however there are some default themes which are
known to work fine with xfce:
- adwaita / adwaita dark
- all xfce-* themes  ( only for gtk2, will not be supported any longer for gtk3
)
- greybird / bluebird / blackbird
