Before testing the same scenario with Nautilus, I found the not so surprising
org.freedesktop.FileManager1 interface[1]. What is really surprising is that
Thunar exposes two interfaces (org.xfce.Thunar and org.xfce.FileManager) but
not this one!

I could see Firefox calling org.freedesktop.FileManager1.ShowItems when
nautilus was installed, but VSCode and IntelliJ still used xdg-open, so it's
their fault the file is not selected. We can't possibly ask all apps out there
to use Thunar's interface, if they want good Linux support they must adhere to
the standards and so do we.

For this reason I'm closing this bug in favor of Bug 12414 (untested workaround
included).
