The performance is much better with this solution. Plus, I like the fact that
you can specify the file to use for the folder icon (folder.jpg, .folder.png,
etc) directly in the thumbnailer file.

Reverting to the default icon might be an issue (if someone doesn't want to
clear their whole cache for one folder and then deal with having it
re-created). Renaming the folder twice doesn't seem to work for me. For other
thumbnails, eg. images, the thumbnail is updated if the mtime (modification
time?) of the file changes. Changing the mtime of the folder (touch -m) or
changing the folder file itself doesn't seem to initiate the refresh. 

Perhaps something can be added to tumbler to watch for this as well?
