I cannot make out any browsing speed difference between the different views, or
between 1.6.x and 1.7.x 
 ... possibly that is beacause I use a ssd.
Which amount of pictures we are talking about ?
And what exactly you mean by "browsing folders" ? Entering them takes time ? Or
scrolling inside of them ?

Maybe take a try with the most recent version of tumbler .. think some
performance issue was fixed for it recently.
