I'm using Arch and even following your instructions I can't make LightDM
display the language selector (I have about 10 locales generated). Using LXDM,
I'm able to switch languages, but this problem doesn't occur.

Running a Xubuntu 17.04 VM I have en_US, de_DE and pt_BR uncommented in
locale.gen, but running locale-gen generates all english variants and LightDM
doesn't allow me select neither German nor Portuguese. When I select en_GB,
Trash becomes Rubbish Bin in desktop and thunar as expected.

I'm starting to suspect this might be a LightDM issue.
