BTW, to see what is going on with xfce4-session you can set XFSM_VERBOSE=1 in
.xinitrc (or whatever your setup uses). When xfce4-session is started, it
checks for this environment variable and, if present, writes a debug log to
~/.xfce4-session.verbose-log
